TL;DR: There are two ways to connect ChatGPT to your Shopify store in 2026. Shopify’s official app inside ChatGPT is free: install it, tag @Shopify, and ChatGPT reads your sales, tracks orders and updates products. datavessel’s MCP connector takes about two minutes too, and adds what the official app leaves out: your analytics, ads and email in the same chat, an approval on every change, a ledger of everything done, and agents that run on a schedule. Which one you want depends on whether the store is the whole job or one part of it. The same connector works in Claude; that guide is connect Claude to your store.
Two ways to connect ChatGPT to Shopify
The official Shopify app. Shopify now ships its own app in ChatGPT. You install it once, connect an existing store or create a new one, and tag @Shopify in any chat to ask for sales data, track orders, update products or check performance without opening the admin. It is free, first-party, and the right answer for a merchant whose questions stay inside Shopify. If that is you, use it.
datavessel’s MCP connector. ChatGPT’s desktop app supports custom connectors over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and datavessel is an MCP server. You paste one URL, sign in, and your store appears in ChatGPT as a connector. The difference is what sits behind that URL: Shopify plus GA4, Search Console, Google and Meta ads, Klaviyo, Merchant Center and reviews, with every write gated behind your approval and every action recorded. That is the setup this guide walks through.
The short decision rule: the official app answers questions about the store. datavessel answers questions about the business, and then does the work on a schedule.
What you can do once connected
ChatGPT sees your store through 22 typed Shopify tools, 12 reads and 10 writes: products, orders, fulfillment orders, inventory levels, customers, discounts, refunds and shop analytics. In practice:
- “Which orders are stuck unfulfilled for more than three days, and which of them are Express shipping?”
- “List products that sold this month but have descriptions under 200 characters”
- “Draft a better description for [product]. Lead with the fit question buyers actually ask”
- “Which customers ordered three times or more this year, and what did they buy first?”
- “Which ad campaigns are still sending traffic to products with fewer than five units left?”
- “Propose a refund for order #1042 for the damaged item only” — calculated first, then executed only after you approve
Reads run freely. Writes, meaning anything that changes the store, pause for your sign-off. More on that below.
Requirements
- A ChatGPT plan that supports custom connectors (Plus, Team or Business), with developer mode enabled in settings
- A free datavessel account with your Shopify store connected. Install from the Shopify App Store or connect at app.datavessel.io; about five minutes
- Any Shopify plan
How to connect ChatGPT to Shopify: step by step
Step 1: Connect your store to datavessel
Install datavessel from the Shopify App Store, so billing, permissions and revocation all run through Shopify itself, or sign in at app.datavessel.io and add Shopify as a source. The connection is a scoped grant you can revoke in your Shopify admin at any time. Add GA4, Search Console and your ad accounts while you are there; each one becomes tools in the same conversation.
Step 2: Enable developer mode in ChatGPT
Open the ChatGPT desktop app, go to Settings, then Connectors, and enable developer mode. This is what unlocks adding custom MCP connectors alongside the built-in ones, including the official Shopify app if you keep both.
Step 3: Add the datavessel connector
Still in Connectors, choose to add a custom connector and enter this URL:
https://mcp.datavessel.io/mcp
ChatGPT opens a sign-in window. Log in with your datavessel account and grant access. That is the whole setup. No API keys are pasted anywhere, and the Shopify tools now appear in ChatGPT’s connector list.
Step 4: Ask your first question
Start a new chat and ask something concrete: “What Shopify tools do you have?” is a good first question. Then try the health check: orders, revenue and average order value for the last 30 days against the 30 before, and where the difference came from.
What about changes to the store? You approve them.
This is the part that separates a connector from a chat toy. Of the 22 Shopify tools, 10 change the store: product creation and updates, inventory adjustments, order updates and cancellations, fulfillments and tracking, discounts and refunds. Every one of them is gated. ChatGPT proposes the change with the exact values, and it waits in your datavessel sign-off inbox, on web or mobile, until you tap approve.
Two guardrails worth knowing. Refunds are calculated by a read tool first, so you see the amount before the write is even proposed. And every approved change lands in an audit ledger: what changed, on which store, approved by whom. That record is the same whichever door was used, ChatGPT, Claude, the web app or the CLI.
One connector for the store, your ads and your email
Merchants often run separate ChatGPT connectors for Google Ads reporting, Meta reporting and analytics. datavessel serves Google Ads, Meta, GA4, Search Console, Klaviyo, Google Merchant Center and Judge.me through the same connector as the store. The cross-cutting questions become one prompt:
- “Compare last week’s ad spend by campaign against actual Shopify revenue from those products”
- “Which search queries bring traffic to collection pages with thin descriptions?”
- “Which products in my Merchant Center feed are disapproved, and are any of them in active campaigns?”
The official Shopify app cannot answer any of these, because it only sees Shopify. That is the whole difference in one paragraph.
ChatGPT, Claude, or both?
The endpoint is standard MCP, so it is not tied to one assistant. The same URL works in Claude Desktop and Claude Code, the Gemini CLI, Cursor and other MCP clients. Teams that use ChatGPT for daily work and Claude for heavier agent runs connect both: same store, same approval gate, same ledger.
Beyond chat: scheduled jobs and triggers
Chat answers when you ask. Operations are recurring, and nobody wants to ask “anything stuck?” every morning. Inside datavessel the same tools power scheduled agents: an order-desk sweep, a stock-versus-ads watch, a weekly product-copy refresh, each deployed with a policy that decides when it runs and whether it asks you first. Webhooks add triggers, so a new order or a refund request can start a run without a prompt. Start in ChatGPT, and when a task becomes routine, hand it to a policy.
Running more than one store, or running stores for clients? One connector carries every store, with data isolated per client and a ledger per store. The pattern is in manage multiple Shopify stores.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Shopify app for ChatGPT?
Yes. Shopify’s own app in ChatGPT is free: install it, connect your store, and tag @Shopify to ask for sales data, track orders and update products. It covers Shopify only, answers only when prompted, and has no schedule, approval queue or cross-source view. Use it for store questions; use datavessel when the questions involve ads, analytics, email or more than one store, or when you want the work done on a schedule.
Do I need to install an app in my store?
Not for the connector itself. datavessel connects through a scoped Shopify grant, either the App Store install or a direct connection, and nothing else touches your store. You can revoke it in your Shopify admin at any time.
Can ChatGPT break something in my store?
Writes are approval-gated by default: nothing changes until you sign it off, and every change is recorded in the ledger. Refund amounts are calculated before they are proposed, and product creation follows your store’s own rules for status and visibility.
What does it cost to run?
datavessel plans are priced by connected stores, free for one store. Model usage runs through your ChatGPT subscription in this setup; datavessel adds no markup on AI usage.
Which Shopify plans are supported?
Any Shopify plan, through the Admin API scopes you grant at install.
Can I use the official Shopify app and datavessel at the same time?
Yes. They are separate connectors in the same ChatGPT settings, and many merchants keep both: @Shopify for quick store questions, datavessel for anything that crosses into ads and analytics or needs an approval and a record.
Set it up now
Connect your store at app.datavessel.io, add the connector URL in ChatGPT, and ask your first question. Setup is about two minutes; the first useful answer usually takes one more. Running Shopware or WooCommerce too? The same setup works: ChatGPT and Shopware · ChatGPT and WooCommerce.
