“Shopify MCP server” now means at least four different things. Shopify ships a Dev MCP server for people building apps, a Storefront MCP server on every store for shopping agents, a Customer Accounts MCP server for order tracking, and first-party connector apps that let a merchant manage a store from Claude or ChatGPT. The official Shopify MCP servers, by job
Dev MCP server. Part of the Shopify AI Toolkit, open-sourced in April 2026. It connects coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor to Shopify’s Admin API documentation and GraphQL schemas, so a developer can search docs, validate queries and, through the toolkit, run store operations from a coding session. Its user is the person building or maintaining a Shopify app or theme.
Storefront MCP server. A hosted endpoint on your store’s own domain. External shopping agents use it to search your catalog, manage a cart and answer policy questions. It is shop-facing and read-oriented: an outside agent cannot edit your admin through it. This is the server that makes your products discoverable to AI buyers, and it is the piece agentic commerce is built on.
Customer Accounts MCP server. Order tracking, returns and account information for the shopper, so a buyer’s assistant can answer “where is my order” without a support ticket.
The Shopify apps in Claude and ChatGPT. Not servers you configure, but the same idea for merchants: install Shopify’s connector, and ask for sales, orders and product updates from chat. Free, first-party, store-only. We cover the ChatGPT one in connect ChatGPT to Shopify.
Community admin servers. Open-source projects that expose the Admin API over MCP with whatever scopes are on the token you give them. Powerful, and entirely your responsibility: hosting, secrets, and every write the model decides to make.
What none of them do
Each official server is scoped to one relationship: developer to docs, shopper to storefront, customer to their orders, merchant to the store. That scoping is correct, and it leaves four jobs open:
- Cross-source questions. “Which ad sets are still sending traffic to products with fewer than five units left” needs Shopify inventory and the ad account in one conversation. No Shopify server sees Meta or Google Ads, GA4, Search Console, Klaviyo, Merchant Center or reviews.
- Approvals. A merchant connector executes what it is asked. There is no queue where a proposed refund waits with its reasoning for a tap on a phone.
- A record. Which agent changed which product, when, approved by whom. The admin activity log shows the change, not the reasoning or the approval.
- Work on a schedule. Every official server answers when asked. None runs the order-desk sweep at 06:00.
