How to Connect Google Analytics (GA4) to ChatGPT or Claude

You can connect Google Analytics to ChatGPT or Claude in about two minutes with datavessel’s MCP connector: sign in with Google once, add one connector URL to your assistant, and it can run GA4 reports and realtime reports, read your custom dimensions, pull the e-commerce checkout funnel step by step, and pair all of it with Search Console, your store and your ad accounts in the same chat. No service account, no JSON key, no CSV exports. The same connector is the one in connect Claude to your store; GA4 is one more source behind it.

The three ways to get GA4 into an assistant

1. Export and paste. Download a report, drop it in the chat. It works once and it is stale by tomorrow, and the assistant can only answer about the columns you exported.

2. Google’s official Analytics MCP server. Google publishes an open-source local server that uses the Admin and Data APIs: account summaries, property details, standard and realtime reports, funnel reports, custom dimensions and metrics. It is a good, honest tool for a developer: you run it on your machine with Google Cloud credentials, and it covers Analytics alone.

3. A hosted connector that already speaks GA4. You authorize with Google’s normal sign-in, and the tools appear in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or the Gemini CLI next to your other sources. That is the route below, and it is also the route the data-pipeline vendors sell, with one difference: datavessel’s connector can act on the store the numbers point at.

What ChatGPT or Claude can do once connected

datavessel exposes seven Google Analytics tools, all reads, so nothing here can change anything in your property:

  • Standard reports with any dimensions and metrics the Data API supports: sessions, users, revenue, conversion events, by channel, landing page, device, country, date.
  • Realtime reports for what is happening on the site right now.
  • The e-commerce checkout funnel as six steps, view item to purchase, with drop-off between steps, the previous period for comparison, the biggest drop named, and a breakdown by device, country, source or landing page that names the worst segment.
  • Account summaries and property details, so the assistant discovers your properties instead of asking for IDs.
  • Custom dimensions and metrics, so your own event parameters are usable in reports.
  • Linked Google Ads accounts for the property.

The questions look like this:

  • “Compare sessions and revenue by channel for the last 28 days against the 28 before”
  • “Which landing pages lost the most sessions week over week, and from which source?”
  • “Where does the checkout funnel leak, and on which device?”
  • “What is on the site right now, and where did those visitors come from?”
  • “Which custom events do we have, and how many fired last week?”

Because the store sits in the same connector, the follow-ups work too: “of the landing pages that lost sessions, which products are out of stock.”

Connect Google Analytics to Claude: step by step

  1. Sign in at app.datavessel.io and add Google Analytics as a source. It is a standard Google sign-in; choose the properties to expose. Revoke it from your Google account at any time.
  2. Add the connector to Claude. In Claude Desktop, Settings, then Connectors, add a custom connector with https://mcp.datavessel.io/mcp and sign in. In Claude Code, add the same URL as an MCP server.
  3. Ask. “Which Analytics properties can you see?” then a real question.

Connect Google Analytics to ChatGPT

Same server, different door. In the ChatGPT desktop app enable developer mode under Settings, then Connectors, add a custom connector with the same URL, sign in, and the Analytics tools appear next to your other connectors. Steps two and three with screenshots are in connect ChatGPT to Shopify; they are identical for Analytics.

Pair it with Search Console: the SEO combination

Analytics tells you what happened on the site. Search Console tells you what happened in Google before the click. Most questions worth asking need both, and most connectors give you one. In datavessel both sit behind the same URL, so “traffic to these pages dropped, which queries lost impressions, and did position or click rate move” is one conversation. Add Search Console as a source the same way, and the eleven Search Console tools join the seven Analytics ones. The Search Console side on its own is in Google Search Console MCP.

Then the pages the data points at are the ones the assistant can also change, with your approval: product and category copy, meta titles, CMS pages, SEO URLs, through the store tools.

Pair it with Tag Manager: when a funnel step reads zero

The other pairing is for the days the numbers are wrong rather than bad. A checkout step at zero between two populated steps is a measurement problem, not a conversion problem, and the same connector now carries Google Tag Manager, read-only: the assistant pulls the funnel, traces the six GA4 events through the container to the tag and trigger that send each one, and reports whether a trigger listens for a dataLayer event the theme no longer pushes or whether the fix is sitting unpublished in a workspace. It cannot change a tag; it tells you which one to open. The method and the eleven read tools are in Google Tag Manager MCP.

From reports to work on a schedule

Chat answers when you ask. Inside datavessel the same tools run on a schedule: a conversion alert that fires when traffic is stable but conversion drops, a weekly funnel read, a Monday report to Slack or email with the week’s numbers and what moved. The funnel method is in where your checkout funnel is leaking, and the whole loop in what an AI CRO agent actually does.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT connect to Google Analytics?

Yes. ChatGPT’s desktop app accepts custom MCP connectors in developer mode. Add a connector that speaks Google Analytics, sign in with Google, and ChatGPT can run reports from your properties. datavessel is one such connector, and it carries Search Console and your store as well.

Does Google have an official Google Analytics MCP server?

Yes, an open-source local server using the Admin and Data APIs. It is built for developers who run it on their own machine with Google Cloud credentials. It covers Analytics only.

Do I need a service account or API key?

Not with datavessel. It uses Google’s standard OAuth sign-in, so there is no Cloud project, no service-account JSON and nothing to rotate. Access is revocable from your Google account.

Can the assistant change anything in Google Analytics?

No. All seven tools are reads. Writes happen on the store side, where the pages and products live, and every one waits for your approval.

Which GA4 reports can it run?

Anything the Data API supports: standard reports with your choice of dimensions and metrics, realtime reports, the e-commerce checkout funnel, and reports using your custom dimensions and metrics. Reports are returned as rows the assistant reasons over, not as screenshots.

Does it work with Universal Analytics?

No. GA4 only, through the current Google Analytics APIs.

What does it cost?

The connector is included in every plan, including the free one for a single store. Model usage runs through your own ChatGPT or Claude subscription.

The bottom line

Connecting Google Analytics to ChatGPT or Claude is a two-minute job now. The choice that matters is what sits behind the connector: Analytics alone, or Analytics next to Search Console, the store and the ads, so the assistant that finds the drop can also propose the fix.
