Your best seller might be your worst product
Open almost any ecommerce dashboard and it will proudly show you three numbers: revenue, orders, units sold. Every one of them is a vanity metric if you don’t know what’s left after costs. Because the product driving your biggest revenue line can quietly be the one draining your bank account.
A tale of two products
Consider two products a store might celebrate or ignore based on the wrong number:
| Product | Revenue | Profit |
|---|---|---|
| Product A (the “hero”) | €50,000 | €2,000 |
| Product B (the “afterthought”) | €12,000 | €8,000 |
Product A looks like the star. But Product B makes four times the profit on a quarter of the revenue. A store optimizing for revenue pours ad spend into A. A store optimizing for profit scales B. The dashboard that only shows revenue actively points you the wrong way.
Where the margin actually goes
Revenue is gross. Profit is what survives the gauntlet of:
- Cost of goods — the obvious one, and often the only one people subtract
- Shipping — heavy or bulky products can eat the entire margin
- Returns — a return-heavy product sells twice and profits zero
- Discounts — the coupon that “drove the sale” may have erased the margin
- Marketing spend — if it costs €30 in ads to sell a €35-margin item, you’re running a charity
These are your hidden margin killers: expensive-to-ship items, discount abuse, and return-heavy SKUs that look healthy in every revenue report and bleed you in reality.
Ask for profit, not revenue
datavessel reads your products, orders, discounts, and marketing spend together — so you can ask the profit question directly instead of exporting three CSVs into a spreadsheet at month-end:
- “Rank my products by profit, not revenue.”
- “Which products have the highest return or discount rate?”
- “Where is marketing spend higher than the margin it brings in?”
The answer reframes your whole catalog: the quiet Product B gets the budget it deserves, and the flashy Product A gets a hard look at its shipping and discount lines.
The takeaway
Revenue tells you how busy you are. Profit tells you whether being busy is worth it. Most stores optimize the first because it’s the number the dashboard shows — and leave real money on the table. Make your data show you profit, and let the margin killers hide nowhere.
